About the Department

The founder of the specialty "Translation" at SSU: Professor, Doctor of Philology, Academician of the Higher School Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Svitlana O. Shvachko.

Specialty: "Translation"

The department performs the preparation of students for Bachelor’s Degree (4 years of studying – Bachelor-Philologist-Translator) and Master’s Degree (1 year 4 months of studying – Master of Translation, Translator, Teacher of English and German).

Our alumni work as translators at state institutions and private companies of Ukraine and European countries, as teachers at schools, gymnasiums, higher education institutions, legislative authorities and mass media.

Laboratory, Department Training Centers

The Department of Germanic Philology created:

Translation Training Center "LingouStar", which is preparing, organizing, and conducting international language exams (tests) TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC; Research Office; Career Office; Travel office; Courses of English; Training room; Language lab.

Scientific work

Scientific-investigating laboratory was created within the department to increase the level of the research work, performed by teaching staff, students, postgraduate students and to implement the results of investigations to solve important scientific-theoretical problems within general linguistics, modern interpretation and Germanic linguistics.

The Department has a PhD student program (10.02.04 – Germanic languages), provided by experienced supervisors. At present, for full-time and correspondence seven postgraduate students and two doctoral students at other universities are studying.

Faculties are the authors of monographs, textbooks, teaching materials, participating in national and international conferences.

Special attention is paid by scientific department staff to work with students who are involved in the work to develop scientific directions of the department, taking part in a planned research during theoretical studies.

The department produces special edition of the journal «Filologichni Traktaty», which publishes scientific works of Philology and Translation in Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, English, German and French. Founders of the edition are Sumy State University and V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Conferences and competitions

In 2003 the Department initiated an international scientific conference "Methodological problems of Modern Translation", held All-Ukrainian Student Scientific Conference "Translation Innovations" and contest of author poems and literary translation «Alter Ego».

International contacts

The main direction of the international contacts of the Department of Germanic Philology is cooperation with international partners in the sphere of education. The Department maintains strong links with well-known foreign linguists. Among them: Maryna V. Pimenova (Kemerovo State University, the Russian Federation), Valentyna A. Maslova (Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov, the Republic of Belarus), Volodymyr V. Kolesov (Saint Petersburg State University, the Russian Federation), Yevheniia O. Zhuravlova (L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the Republic of Kazakhstan), Aleksander Kobylarek, Jacek Gulanowski (University of Wroclaw, Poland), Inta Buka (Baltic International Academy, Latvia).

In 2015, Sumy State University and the Ukrainian Humanitarian Institute Bucha signed a cooperation agreement.

In 2014 Sumy State University signed cooperation agreement with Kemerovo State University.

In 2013 Sumy State University and Baltic International Academy concluded cooperation agreement with the purpose of cooperation establishment, regulation of academic collaboration, joint research and exchange programs in the field of education and science.

The Department is the member of Ukrainian Society for the Study of English (USSE), branch of European studios. Lecturers regularly take part in the conferences organized by TESOL, IATEFL in the following cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Vinnytsia and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Every year the departments acquire experience, practice in teaching English and German as well as Russian language students and volunteers from different countries.

The department conducts roundtable "Improvement of the quality control of higher education and the Bologna process" of Warmia-Mazury University in Olsztyn. Conducted meetings with the American House and the British Council. Signed agreements with the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), Mozyr Pedagogical Institute (Belarus) Brest State University named after AS Pushkin (Belarus).

Teachers, students and undergraduates of the Department annually make presentations at international conferences and participating in international programs in Ukraine, UK, the USA, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Armenia, Russia, Belarus. To increase the level of knowledge of the German language students can attend Yyenu, Stuttgart, Munich and Vienna program DAAD.

Cooperation in Ukraine

For the practical implementation of the concept of training for interpreters in conditions of higher educational institutions of Ukraine reached an agreement with the Department of Translation from English of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University on cooperation, according to which certain development, experimental verification and publication of methodological and reference materials created educational-methodical complex (SMC) for the training of translators in Ukraine. Signed agreements on cooperation with Zaporizhzhya State University, Izmail Institute of Water Transport, University of Volyn, Zhytomyr Pedagogical Institute, Bila Tserkva National Agrarian Academy. Faculty regularly Contest, entrants tests in schools of the region.

Professor Shvachko Svitlana O. and Professor, PhD in Philological Sciences Kobyakova Iryna K. are members of the Ukrainian Association of Cognitive Linguistics and poetics. The majority of the staff belongs to the department of Ukrainian Union of Translation Teachers and the Association of Ukrainian Germanists
